One of the most annoying aspects of improving your life is the falling off the horse bit. With every change there will undoubtedly be moments when you relapse into your old way of doing things. If you could know what to do at these points and reduce them over time then you’ll have a much better chance of sticking to it and achieving success.
It’s inevitable that your unconscious will revert back to what is most comfortable and at these moments it’s important to gently pull yourself back on track. Habits become deep-rooted and if you’re trying to change one then you need to be patient. Here are 5 steps that you can try, to ensure that you eventually get there.
The most important thing you can do when you are attempting to change the way that you choose to behave is to keep yourself on track. It is common for a new behaviour to be followed by a surge of energy and motivation but this initial high then begins to dwindle. If you don’t keep that level of motivation up then you’ll begin to revert to what you were. By constantly reminding yourself of what you’re trying to achieve it will keep it fresh in your mind.
This means that you concentrate on what you’re aiming for rather than what you’re changing from. For example, if you want to give up smoking most people will constantly focus on NOT smoking but all this does is remind you of smoking. Instead you should concentrate on what you can do now you’re not a smoker, this way the smoking will become irrelevant quicker.
Write it down
It will definitely help to write your goals down so that you can constantly refer to them but also the exercise itself of articulating the very thing you’re aiming for is helpful. It takes the idea out of your head and into some tangible realm. Once it’s down on paper you can start to believe it more.
The words that you use when you talk to yourself is the most powerful voice in your life. If you’re constantly negative, beat yourself up and go on about what you’re missing then you’ll have no chance. If you want to change your life in a positive way then you’ll need to stop being cynical about what you’re trying to do. Support yourself and encourage yourself to being better because if you don’t then who else is.
Every now and again you will fall off the horse because it’s only natural. We’re all humans and we all have flaws that make us who we are so you must remember this. When you do relapse all you have to do is notice it for what it is. Don’t beat yourself up and dwell on it, allowing you to believe that the game’s up and you might as well pack it in. It’s a one-off and nothing more. Don’t give it anymore attention than that, otherwise you’ll feed the demons within that don’t want you to succeed.
These five points will definitely help you to change your life. What things have you changed in your life that you can gain confidence from now?
